Artist Deborah Hecht has always picked up trash on the Lake Michigan beach where she walks each summer. The amount of trash she collected in 2017 was overwhelming so she decided to make art from it. In her Beach Trash Series, Deborah uses the objects she found on the beach to create beautiful mosaics. “The challenge in these mosaics is to convey alarm about the problem and still have an intriguing composition,” she explains.
Deborah’s Beach Trash Series will be on display at the Capt. Thomas M. Kelly Biological Station beginning June 21 during the building’s grand opening and will run through July 20. A silent auction will be held from 5:30-7:00 pm on June 21 with remaining pieces for sale until July 20. Proceeds from the sale of her mosaics throughout the month-long exhibit benefit Inland Seas Education Association. Bid amounts above retail price during the Silent Auction are also donated to ISEA.
